Question 1 - in what way does you rmedia product use, develop or challenge codes and conventions of real media products

Our media product is a teaser trailer for a romantic comedy film called 'Footsteps and Tyre tracks'. The film follows a group of young teenagers who have to fight to keep their friendship together, and after the main protagonist Emily is involved in an accident and her friends go on a mission to find her after she ran away, although they don't know if they are going to find the same Emily. We aimed our film at both male and females aged between 12 and 24 as we felt that having mixed gender characters in our film, would allow us to attract a mixed gender target audience. Romantic comedies are usually targeted at mainly females audiences but we feel that both genders in our target audience could easily identify with the youth related issues within our production.

We researched several romantic comedies to inform us of the typical codes and conventions of the genre. We looked a 'The fault in our stars', Love Rosie', 'Paper towns' and 'Me and Earl and the dying girl'. All of the themes in the films touch on relationships, love and illness(mental and physical). We followed the typical convention of a love story between two characters which is easy for audiences to follow and we also challenged several of the themes in order to make the product less stereotypical. Our two main protagonists are both together in a relationship but it begins to crumble when Ely has her car accident. We challenged the conventions of the genre by switching up the narrative and adding in a twist where the two male protagonists go in search of Emily, to try and piece their friendships and relationships back together. In many romantic comedies there are a male and female protagonist who are in a relationship and they have one friend who they are always with. In or production, we challenged that convention by having two best friends who are male and female, and they are like the support for our main protagonists who are struggling through the difficult time.

Typical locations that are seen in romantic comedies are parks, schools, restaurants or bedrooms (house). We have followed all the conventions of rom coms by including all these locations in our mise en scene making it believable and ensuring we create verisimilitude. Conventional romantic comedy shots include extreme close ups to portray the characters emotions and feelings, particularly on the eyes, allowing the audience to form a connection with the characters. There are also a lot of mid shots in rom coms as they establish the location and allow audiences to be aware of the environment around the characters, and how it may effect them.

To ensure our audiences could connect with the characters and feel involved with the storyline, we used a voiceover in our trailer, allowing the viewer to really understand what is going on and how the characters are feeling. When creating our film, we made sure it wasn't a restricted narration as we believed it could be bore some of the audience if they had to follow a character in a film that they couldn't relate to, so by following all four of the characters equally throughout the film, it means there is someone for all viewers to relate to.

I believe our audiences would use our text in a wide variety ways. They would use our media product for personal identity, finding reinforcement for personal values, and would be inspired by our characters ways and behaviour. Viewers may use our product for information and learning, relating some of the matters in the product to their own lives, allowing them to receive advice from the text if they ever find themselves in similar situations. The aim of our product is to entertain. Audiences watch our film to relax and get away from the stresses of everyday life. Our audiences get involved with storyline, creating a connection between themselves and the characters as they really care about the protagonists journey throughout the film and want to see if there is going to be a happy ending.

Overall, I feel that we have followed the codes and conventions of existing media products ensuring we successfully target our mainstream audience. We have challenged some of the codes and conventions which are not typical for romantic comedies, which will intrigue our target audience and make them want to watch our product as it is something different.
