Crowdfunding is the newest way in which mainstream/indie developers can get funding. This give the audience a chance to invest in a project they want to see through websites such as 'Kickstarter', 'indiegogo', 'Gofundme' etc. There are many examples of mainstream and indie products that have taken advantage of this new way of funding;
Starcitizen:
This sci-fi game started its life on kickstarter and asked the public to pledge their money to help them create the game, their original goal was $500,000 but by the time the kickstarter ended they had raised over $2,000,000. Even after their kickstarter ended they continued to raise money and have currently raised over $49,000,000 so far.
Lazer Team:

This sci-fi comedy film was created by the web company 'Rooster Teeth' and asked their pre existing audience to raise $650,000 however they ended up raising just under 2,500,000 and released the film in cinemas all over the US in march of 2016.
Youth, Go to Waste!- short film
This short film was launched on April 6th 2016 and by May 4th 2016 it had raised $2,030.
Crowdfunding is also a way for fan to help create more of their favourite series, for example the fans for the tv series 'Veronica Mars' and by using crowdfunding the creators were able to make a film. This reinforces David Gauntletts Web 2.0 theory as more so than ever the audience have an impact on not only if a piece of media is successful but if it is even made.
